It's always the last minute for me...always. Deadlines are two-edged swords, your friend and enemy.

Hi Mister P,

it seems to be how our nonconscious mind is motivated.
I have a technique for some of my productivity which leverages that rather than fights against human nature.

Excellent point indeed!

Unfortunately, I work well under pressure. I often feel that I have ADD until crunch time when suddenly I become completely focused and get the job done at the last possible second. I'm not proud of that, I hate that I always do that to myself, but its just what I do and I can't seem to change it.

Under pressure the key is having direction. I have caught myself staring at the computer screen a few times in the last week. I've identified the cause as

1) taking on too many new things all simultaneously
2) not prioritising correctly
3) not taking into account that my lack of experience means a three minute task turns into three hours most of the time

The "pressure" is best delt with in small steps. If I attempt to big a step then I feel stuck - a sign a smaller step is needed. By breaking tasks down this way I can accomplish stuff. Whether it is useful I have found is another thing altogether....

Feeling "under pressure" can be a motivator but can be a form of overwhelm. Either way, my advice is to take the next smallest step towards getting done what need to be done. Then acknowledge you're a step closer and take the next smallest step etc etc in quick succession.

This assumes you've prioritised your 3 deadlines!

This springs the following to mind:

Kevin Hogan says, " The fast eats the slow.", "Sleep when you're dead."

The origin of the word "Deadline": You cross the boundary line, you'll be dead by being shot at."

Files always fill up with the storage space available. Tasks always fills up to the time available.

Time
Money
Energy

Get them in line and realise their scarcity and focus to get results.

Easier said than done, of course.

In my opinion, the deadline is the greatest driver of action and achievement.

Everyone needs to learn how to harness their power to their full advantage.
